Why Does My Garage Smell Like Gas After Parking My Classic Car

You pull into the garage, shut off the engine, close the door, and walk away. A few minutes later, the room smells like gasoline.


That smell can be alarming, and it should never be ignored. Gasoline vapor is flammable, and a strong odor can point to a leak, a loose fitting, or another issue that needs attention. But with many older vehicles, there is another common reason the odor shows up after parking: the fuel tank vent system.


Classic cars, vintage trucks, hot rods, and muscle cars were built with fuel systems that often vent differently from modern vehicles. Even when liquid fuel is not dripping on the floor, gasoline vapors can escape from the tank, travel through the vent, and collect in an enclosed garage.

Older fuel systems do not work like modern fuel systems


Modern vehicles use sealed evaporative emissions systems. In most late-model cars and trucks, the fuel tank vents through a controlled system that routes vapors into a charcoal canister. Those vapors are stored and later drawn into the engine to be burned during normal operation.


Many classic vehicles were designed before those systems became common. Some have a simple vented gas cap. Others use a vent line from the fuel tank. Some have a rollover valve, a small breather, or a vent tube that exits under the vehicle.


Those systems may have worked acceptably when the vehicle was parked outside or stored in a well-ventilated space. Inside a closed garage, the same small amount of vapor can become obvious.

Heat makes fuel odor worse after parking


Heat often explains why the smell seems stronger at certain times.


Gasoline expands as temperatures rise. Warm fuel gives off more vapor, and pressure inside the fuel tank increases. After a drive, heat from the exhaust, pavement, engine, and garage can all add to the problem.
