Ford Bronco Gas Smell: How to Stop Fuel Vapor in Early Broncos and Swaps
Early Broncos are some of the most loved vehicles on the road, and many of them are getting modern upgrades like fuel-injected V8 swaps. One thing that often comes along for the ride is a persistent gas smell.
Why Broncos smell like gas
Early Broncos, like most vehicles of their era, were not built with the vapor control systems found on modern trucks. The fuel tank vents to the atmosphere, and every time the fuel warms up, vapor escapes through the vent.
With the top off, you might not notice it as much on the trail. Park it in a closed garage, though, and the smell builds up fast. Restomods and swaps can add their own vent configurations, which sometimes make the problem worse instead of better.
Check for leaks first
Gas smell can also mean a real leak. Before chasing vapor, inspect the tank, sending unit seal, filler neck, fuel lines and any new fittings from your swap. Fuel injection systems run at higher pressure, so a small weep at a fitting can show up quickly. Fix any leak before you go further.
Adding a charcoal vapor canister
If the system is dry and the smell is still there, the answer is to trap the vapor before it leaves the vent. Vapor Trapper is a billet aluminum charcoal vapor canister that installs in line with your fuel tank vent hose. The charcoal inside captures fuel vapor instead of letting it into the air.
We have seen Vapor Trapper installed in Bronco builds, including LS-swapped rigs, where the clean billet look fits right in with the rest of the build.
Why it works well on Broncos:
Universal design that handles practically any inlet and outlet setup
Works with EFI conversions, aftermarket tanks and fuel cells
6061 billet aluminum body that stands up to trail use
Rechargeable charcoal and a lifetime warranty
Low-Profile option for tight builds
If space under the rig is tight, the Low-Profile Vapor Trapper offers the same vapor control in a slimmer package.
Enjoy the build, not the fumes
Your Bronco should smell like dirt and adventure, not raw fuel. Shop Vapor Trapper at vaportrapper.com.
